When to recharge NiMH batteries?

To keep track of when to recharge my FreePlay Indigo Lanterns and Mini Sherpa flashlights I used a 'Sharpie' brand marker to mark them with O for odd or E for even. At the beginning of each month I top off half of them. Those are never more than one month since being charged and the other half never more than two. These products use regular NiMH batteries which loose most of their charge in three months. There has been some improvement in regular NiMH cells, but SANYO eneloop NiMH slow self discharge cells still hold a pretty good charge after 3 years in storage.
